Pool Tile

Waterline bands, step and spa accents, and full tile interiors: the detail work that makes a pool look custom.

Schedule An Appointment

Waterline tile does more than look good. It’s the band that takes the beating at the surface of the water, where calcium, sunscreen and body oils collect. Good tile protects the finish below it, hides that natural scum line, and is one of the fastest ways to make an older pool look new.

We work in glass, porcelain, ceramic and natural-stone-look tile, and we lay it out with you before anything is set. That way you see the color and pattern in place, not just on a sample board.

Where tile makes the biggest difference

  • Waterline band: protects the finish and gives the pool a clean, finished edge
  • Steps and bench edges: contrast trim makes them easy to see from above and below the water
  • Spa walls and spillovers: glass tile catches light as water sheets over it
  • Raised walls and water features: a focal point without redoing the whole pool
  • Depth markers: set tall and high-contrast so they’re readable at a glance

Signs it’s time to replace your waterline tile

  • Cracked or chipped tiles. Beyond looks, the edges can cut hands and feet.
  • Missing tiles, or tiles that sound hollow when tapped
  • Crumbling, dark or discolored grout
  • Heavy white calcium scale that won’t come off without damaging the glaze
  • Faded, dated tile that no longer fits the rest of the backyard

We recommend glancing along the waterline every few months. Catching one loose tile early costs far less than rebuilding a section after water has gotten in behind it.

Choosing a tile material

MaterialWhy people pick itKeep in mind
PorcelainVery durable, low-absorption, huge range of styles at a fair priceOur go-to for most waterlines
GlassShimmer and color that really pops in Florida sunCosts more; needs careful, experienced setting
CeramicClassic look, budget-friendlyChoose pool-rated, frost/chemical-resistant glazes
Natural stone / stone-lookOrganic, high-end feel next to travertine or paversReal stone needs periodic sealing

What causes tile to crack or pop off?

Usually it’s one of a few things: the ground or structure shifting, calcium building up behind and under the tile, an impact, or old adhesive and grout simply reaching the end of their life. Keeping the water balanced to limit scale is the best prevention.

How we install tile the right way

The work nobody sees decides how long tile lasts. We remove the old tile and setting bed, prep a clean, sound surface, and set new tile in a pool-rated, waterproof thin-set made for submerged use. Spacers keep the joints even. Cuts around fittings are finished smooth, not sharp. Then we work a water-resistant pool grout into every joint and clean it before it sets. Tile that will sit underwater needs proper cure time before the pool is filled. Rushing that step is where most tile failures start.

Tile and resale value

Buyers and inspectors notice the waterline. Cracked or missing tile reads as neglect, and sometimes as hidden water damage. Refreshing the tile before you list a home is a small project that pays off.

How we do it

  1. Plan & previewWe pick the tile together and lay it out so you see the pattern before it’s set.
  2. Lower water & removeFor waterline-only jobs we drop the water below the work area. No full drain is needed. Then we remove the old tile and prep the surface.
  3. Set & groutNew tile goes on with pool-rated thin-set and is grouted with a water-resistant pool grout.
  4. Cure, refill & inspectAfter cure time we refill and check every tile and grout line before we call it done.

Frequently asked questions

How long does tile replacement take?

Most waterline jobs take a few days of work, plus cure time before refilling.

Do you have to drain the whole pool?

Not for waterline tile. We only lower the water below the work area. Full interior tile is done with the pool drained.

Does tile choice affect price?

Yes. Glass and natural stone cost more than porcelain or ceramic. We’ll price options side by side at your free consultation.

Can you just replace a few tiles?

Often, yes, if matching tile is available and the rest of the band is sound. If not, a full new band usually looks better.

Can tile go in at the same time as resurfacing?

That’s the ideal time. The pool is already drained, and finish and tile are planned together.
